BNP Paribas Securities Services has launched an Environmental, Social and corporate Governance guide for Dutch pension funds, in partnership with global ESG research firm, Sustainalytics.
The free guide, “ESG Guide for Dutch Pension Funds: A duty and an opportunity”, provides a roadmap for pension funds looking to incorporate ESG into their asset selection process, offering helpful tips and guidance on how to begin valuing assets and understanding the ESG risk profile of a portfolio.
In addition to working with Sustainalytics, BNP Paribas received valuable input from The Dutch Association of Investors for Sustainable Development (VBDO), Eumedion, the Dutch forum promoting strong corporate governance and sustainability on behalf of institutional investors, and the Dutch Central Bank.
Jan Albert-Koopman, senior business development manager at BNP Paribas Securities Services, said: “There is mounting evidence that incorporating ESG and sustainable risk factors into the investment process can have a positive impact on returns over time. In addition, there is growing pressure on institutions, as well as governments and corporations, to do more to promote sustainable investing and to put investors’ money to work in positive ways.
“This guide is aimed at helping those pension funds which are looking for some initial guidance on how to get started with their own ESG strategy, helping trustees to develop and incorporate an ESG policy relevant to the fund and its members.”
Alexander Rengers, executive director of advisory services at Sustainalytics added: “Increasingly pension funds are seeking tools to help them more seamlessly integrate ESG factors into their investment processes.
“We are honoured to have worked with BNP Paribas to develop this guide, and believe investors looking to advance their responsible investment strategies will benefit from the information.”
The guide supports work BNP Paribas is doing with new and existing clients around sustainable investing. Last year, BNP Paribas Securities Services launched ESG Risk Analytics – a tool which enables asset owners to see how their portfolios are exposed to risks associated with environmental, social and corporate governance.
In 2016 the company also became a signatory to the UN-backed Principles for Responsible Investing, while BNP Paribas Corporate and Institutional Banking announced its intention to become the reference bank for sustainable finance and investment by 2018.
