BNP Paribas takes part in expedition to Spitsbergen to support energy transition

On 23 April a delegation of representatives from the financial and energy sector and consumer representative organisations, among which the Country Head of BNP Paribas The Netherlands, Daniel Thielemans, travelled to Spitsbergen. The objective of the expedition is to work together in contributing to the Dutch climate objectives for 2030.

The expedition is led by polar traveller and climate journalist Bernice Notenboom. Last year Bernice also travelled with a group of business leaders to Spitsbergen, which led to successful new cooperations in the field of sustainability. Also this time the participating companies will work on a shared climate program during the expedition and will experience the consequences of climate change in the arctic region themselves. The companies will continue working together on a sustainable future after the expedition.

Taking action to combat climate change

BNP Paribas has made the fight against climate change its top environmental priority as a global player that finances the energy sector. Our commitment aligns with the Paris agreement, which aims to make financial flows compatible with low-carbon development.

For this, we rely on three levers

  • Partnering with our clients in the transition to a low-carbon economy
  • Reduce the environmental impact of our operations. BNP Paribas is carbon neutral since the end of 2017 for its own operations
  • Advance awareness and sharing of best environmental practices
